Black Mold Removal

Black Mold Removal in Residential and Commercial Locations

The infamous ‘Black Mold’ or Stachybotrys, is the genus of fungi which is currently receiving popular press, as it is related to Indoor Air Quality or IAQ.

The reasons for this are many.  First, because of its’ black coloration, it is not readily visible unless it is contrasted against a very lightly colored surface, such as sheet rock. Second, it is one of the more toxic genuses of mold. By this we mean its’ mycotoxins, or defensive poisons, are specifically damaging to the respiratory and nervous system if one is exposed in concentrations, generally less, than other mold genus such as Cladosporium. Third, this genus of mold tends to grow, massively, in hidden locations. Many times its’ presence is detected, not by visible observation, but by its’ spores appearing in the results of a ‘bio-aerosol’ sampling.

Of all the specific genus of Stachybotrys, the species Stachybotrys chartarum, also known as Stachybotrys atra, which is quite common, is one of the more toxic varieties. This mold variety is common in the northeast United States. This species can cause symptoms, when exposed, which include labored breathing, severe headaches, coughing, transient nausea, short-term memory loss, vertigo, spatial disorientation, nasal passage and eye irritation and conceivably can cause respiratory diseases including asthma, bronchitis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and pneumonia. This particular mold species have been documented to be accountable for more than one-hundred types of lung and bronchial issues besides allergic and asthmatic reactions. Stachybotrys atra can produce effusive bleeding into the lungs, which has been the cause of death in infants.

If one resides in geographic location, with high humidity, or your indoor environment experiences high ambient humidity, the possibility of mold growth, especially Stachybotrys atra is very likely. Measures need to be taken to control its’ growth or eliminate it completely, from indoor air.

High ambient humidity is not the only condition which allows the growth of molds, especially Stachybotrys atra. Unnoticed leaky pipes and drains, in extremely hidden locations, also create ideal conditions for the prolific growth of many species of molds, especially Stachybotrys atra. To complicate matters, these areas where leaks of this nature are likely to occur, are generally not readily assessable to quick inspection. Fortunately, APEX Mold Specialists technicians are well equipped with the latest diagnostic instruments and tools to expedite the general inspection process.

Flooding is another concern for the increased probability of mold infestation. Like in the cases of leaks, water will seep into inaccessible areas, creating the ideal conditions for mold growth, especially Stachybotrys atra. This mold along with others can begin its growth in the days following the apparent drying of the flooding waters.

Generally speaking, specific indications of mold growth, is the staining associated with its infestation on materials. This staining may be slightly yellowish in color to light brown in appearance. The darker the coloration may indicate a more serious problem. Other indicators are foul odors and ‘musty’ like smells. These odors, themselves, if caused by toxic molds, such as Stachybotrys atra, can cause transient illness, such as dizziness and nausea. Heating and air-conditioning systems, if not properly maintained can also serve as a primary source of mold growth and infestation. Only a properly conducted IAQ/Mold inspection, conducted by a company like APEX Mold Specialists, can ascertain and verify the existence of these environmentally invasive microorganisms.

This ‘Black Mold’, as well as other species of molds, should not to be taken dismissively. If invasive mold growth is discovered and verified, a thorough remediation and disinfection is in order and should be performed in a very timely manner. This will guarantee its’ destruction and prevention of its’ future return.

If you have any reason to believe that this species of mold is growing anywhere within your premises, as well as other potentially toxic species, please contact APEX Mold Specialists  possible for a free consultation over the phone.
